President-elect Joe Biden is formally introducing his nominee for attorney general, Merrick Garland, Thursday afternoon.

The event follows a day of violence and an overnight session of Congress that ended in a final affirmation of Biden’s election win.

Garland, 68, has been the Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since 2013.

After Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died in 2013, then-President Barack Obama nominated Garland to replace him. But Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, refused to hear his confirmation and Garland’s nomination expired in 2017, paving the way for President Donald Trump to nominate Republican Neil Gorsuch to the seat.

Garland is a native of Chicago, Illinois and a graduate of Harvard. He succeeds William Barr as attorney general.
