Start Counting: 1,000 Businesses In 100 Counties In 100 Days

The governor and his workforce development team are keeping busy until it’s time for the legislature to meet again.  They are visiting 1,000 businesses in 100 days in all 100 counties.

It’s being described as a fact-finding tour.   State Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker is taking part in the tour that is part of NCWorks.

“So over the next 100 days, the governor and I and members of this administration, this is a collaborative effort, across state government, will be going to companies like yours, and just listening.  And understanding what the challenges are," said Decker.

Governor Pat McCrory says he wants to know what businesses need to grow and prosper.

“We want to find out, how do we make you continue to grow and make money and how do you find the talent," said McCrory.

The first stop on the tour was at Deutsche Bank’s global technology center in Cary.

Dan Minto heads the center.

“We have seen some phenomenal growth this year, through bringing people out of the universities and getting people to the right skills that match the right jobs," said Minto.  "But we need more.”

McCrory acknowledged there is a skills gap in the state.  And he noted, four-year college degrees aren’t necessarily the answer to filling that gap.

Yesterday, the "1,000 in 100" workforce development tour included Cary, Charlotte and Greensboro.
