The Latest News On The Coal Ash Spill in Eden, NC
Coal ash is the waste that remains when coal is burned. It is usually collected in a dump, known as a pond. North Carolina has more than 30 such sites in 14 different locations across the state. A pipe running under one of the ponds run by Duke Energy in Eden NC ruptured in February of 2014. The coal ash spilled, largely affecting the Dan River which flows into Virginia. The spill is the third largest of its kind in U.S. history.Many see potential complications because North Carolina's governor, Pat McCrory, worked for Duke Energy for 28 years.

Senate Bill: $275,000 To Common Core Commission, $675,000 to Coal Ash Commission

North Carolina will be missing out on $51 billion from Mediciad because they chose not to expand coverage.

State Senators are allocating money to fight a lawsuit and fund commissions. Here's how the money would be spent:

  • $675,000 would fund the Coal Ash Management Commission.
  • $100,000 would be moved from the Department of Public Instruction in order to fight a suit filed by the State Board of Education over administrative review.
  • $275,000 would be allocated to the Commission that is re-examining the Common Core curriculum.

"This is something that kind of comes out of nowhere. So that's why we're here today - early in session -  to deal with some of this stuff, because you don't budget for it," said Majority Senate Leader Harry Brown.
