The Neighborhood Where Elizabeth Smart Was Held, And How No One Noticed She Was There

Painting: Le Visage (Visage et mains) by Fernand Leger
Musee National Fernand Leger

As the details about three rescued women in Cleveland, Ohio unfolds, we offer a story from contributor Scott Carrier. He lived in Salt Lake City when 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was abducted and then lived basically in plain sight for months. He says that we can be blind to what is right in front of us.

Hear this piece on this edition of The Story. Also in this show: Dr. T. Berry Brazelton, who is 95 and one of the country’s most respected pediatricians; and the original Teenage Diary from Josh Cutler, who has struggled with Tourette's Syndrome.

Before coming to North Carolina Public Radio to host The Story, Dick Gordon was host of The Connection, a daily national call-in talk show produced in Boston, from 2001 to 2005. Gordon is well-known in the profession as an experienced, seasoned journalist with an extensive background in both international and domestic reporting. He was a war correspondent and back-up host for the CBC's This Morning, a national current affairs radio program. An award winning journalist, he has also served as a Parliamentary reporter, Moscow correspondent and South Asia correspondent for both radio and television.
