Former Aide Cross Examined in Edwards Trial

John Edwards
Jeff Tiberii

Cross-examination of a former John Edwards aide will likely continue all day at a federal courthouse in Greensboro.

Jeff Tiberii: When direct questioning of Andrew Young concluded before lunchtime on Wednesday, judge Catherine Eagles turned to defense attorney Abbey Lowell and asked about cross examination: “I assume you will be going all afternoon”. A nationally renowned litigator, Lowell dryly responded: “Maybe into next week”. That quick remark triggered a smile from the former presidential candidate, but no visible reaction from Young. On Wednesday, Lowell spent two and a half hours, pointing out minor inconsistencies when comparing Young’s testimony with his book and other recorded interviews. The defense hopes to paint the prosecution’s star Witness, as a man lacking credibility. They contend Young used hundreds of thousands of dollars meant to hide Edwards affair, to build a house for his family. Legal experts say efforts by the defense to discredit Young and cast him in a poor light to the jury could be pivotal to the case.

Jeff Tiberii is the co-host of WUNC's "Due South." Jeff joined WUNC in 2011.
