For the first time since 1996, NASCAR is back at the North Wilkesboro Speedway. The sport will host its All-Star race there this Sunday, and it was made possible, in part, by the use of federal funds through the American Rescue Plan Act.
The state Senate plans to consider first an override Tuesday afternoon. House Speaker Tim Moore’s chief of staff said the speaker then aims to complete the override later in the day should Senate Republicans be successful.
Hundreds of abortion-rights activists and voters watched Gov. Roy Cooper affix his veto stamp to the bill that would have banned all abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy. The veto launches a major test for leaders of the GOP-controlled General Assembly to attempt to override Cooper’s veto after they recently gained veto-proof majorities in both chambers.
Cooper usually vetoes bills privately in his office, announcing his decision in a press release. This time he'll take his veto stamp to a much more public setting.
Cooper, a Democrat, released his budget proposal in March. The Republican-led House passed its budget in April. The Senate’s vote this week kicked off weeks of closed-door budget negotiations between House and Senate leaders.
