Greensboro Begins Recycling Program for Mattresses

A new program in Greensboro aims to keep old mattresses from being sent to the dump.

In what is believed to be the first initiative of its kind in the country the City is partnering with Mattress Go Round. The Greensboro company recycles old mattresses and box springs by repairing, sanitizing and rebuilding them for resale. President and Founder of the company Robert Savino says keeping the bulky mattresses out of landfills will save space and money.

Robert Savino: "We actually break those down, cut them open and separate all the different component parts of that mattress. And there is everything in there from steel to foam to cotton to polyester. All of those individual component products then go to other manufacturers who use those products to repurpose those into other things."

The city will pay the company nine dollars for each mattress it picks up. That’s less than what it was costing the city to bring the mattresses to the dump.
