Nyang'Oro Will Be Investigated By SBI

The Orange County District Attorney has asked the State Bureau of Investigation to look into the activities of a UNC-Chapel Hill professor. Julius Nyang'Oro is accused of being paid for classes he did not teach.

Dave DeWitt: Until last year, Nyang'Oro was the chair of the African and Afro-American Studies Department. He resigned from that position last August. The University then launched an internal investigation. That report revealed Nyang'oro had been the faculty member of record for nearly 50 summer classes that never met. The report also detailed forged signatures and unauthorized grade changes. Nyang'Oro says in the report that an office manager, Debbie Crowder, had access and may have made the changes. Both are now under investigation by the SBI for possible computer or financial fraud.

Dave DeWitt is WUNC's Supervising Editor for Politics and Education. As an editor, reporter, and producer he's covered politics, environment, education, sports, and a wide range of other topics.
