UNC-Chapel Hill Facing Steep Cuts

UNC-Chapel Hill is taking the largest budget cut in the university system. Chapel Hill will receive 18 percent less funding from the state this year.

The cuts to the 17 UNC campuses will be doled out in varying degrees. Small campuses that get a higher percentage of their funding from the state will see smaller cuts. UNC-Chapel Hill gets slashed the most at 18 percent, or more than $100 million. The state legislature’s budget law prohibited an across the board cut at each campus that would have been about 16 percent. The sizable cut at UNC Chapel Hill may have a detrimental impact on its reputation as one of the nation’s best higher education bargains. Among its peer institutions, only UC Berkley has seen deeper cuts.
