School Board Mulls Assignment

Debra Goldman
Wake Schools

The Wake County School Board meets later today. One item on the agenda is a discussion on a revised student assignment plan for next year.

Earlier this year, the Wake School Board ended its policy of assigning some students based on socio-economic diversity. But the old long-term plan in place, the question becomes: How quickly will the Board move students to schools closer to their homes?  Republicans on the board want it done for next school year. Democrats want to wait until a long-term plan is discussed and voted on. In the middle is Debra Goldman. She split recently from her fellow Republicans but says she is still committed to community schools.  Magnet-school students and students in low-income areas like southeast Raleigh would be most directly affected by the changes.
