We are rarely starstruck here at Alt.Latino, but when we heard Mexican singer Julieta Venegas was coming to visit, Felix and I definitely broke into a sweat. Not only is she a Grammy-winning, internationally acclaimed artist, but her passion and commitment are admirable. Whether with a scrappy punk band from Tijuana or playing accordion-infused pop, she always pours her heart out.
Anyone who's met Venegas will also tell you it's impossible to get nervous around her. She is one of those warm, calm people whose very presence is soothing. The minute she came into the NPR building, she hugged us and started chatting about what motivated her writing on this new record, how she got into music and what she's been listening to lately. And while her fellow Mexican musicians got a whole lot of love, she also revealed her soft spot for Chilean artists. When we finished taping the show, she stuck around chatting about what it's like traveling with her baby and showing us pictures. You just can't fake that down-to-earth quality.
Amidst so many female musicians whose body measurements are better known than the reasoning behind their music, this woman is a true goddess.

Esta Semana En Alt.Latino: Invitada Especial Julieta Venegas
Cualquiera que haya conocido a Julieta Venegas te dirá lo mismo: a pesar de que ha ganado múltiples premios Grammy y es una de las artistas latinas con más reconocimiento internacional, es prácticamente imposible sentirse nervioso cuando estás con ella. Venegas es una de esas personas con una personalidad tan tranquila y tibia, que su presencia tiene un efecto tranquilizante. Cuando entró a nuestros estudios, nos abrazó y comenzó a hablarnos sobre su más reciente álbum ("Otra Cosa"). También nos contó sobre como de pequeña se interesó en la música, y que artistas ha estado escuchando últimamente. Y aunque tiene un enorme cariño por sus compatriotas los músicos mexicanos, también nos reveló su debilidad por la música chilena.
Cuando terminamos de grabar el programa, se quedó charlando con nosotros sobre como es estar de gira con su bebe, y mostrándonos fotos. Es difícil encontrar una artista de esa magnitud, con una personalidad tan humilde.
En un mar de artistas femeninas cuya apariencia física es más galardonada que su música, esta mujer es una verdadera diosa.
Espero que tengas oportunidad de escuchar el show de hoy, porque creo que al igual que Felix y yo, te sentirás inspirado por una artista cuya pasión sigue tan ardiente como cuando se subió al escenario por primera vez.
