A music icon, Buffy Sainte-Marie was one of the leading voices of 1960s and '70s folk music, with songs like "Universal Soldier" and "Now That the Buffalo's Gone." She was a cast member on Sesame Street in the '70s, and she wrote hits for others, including "Up Where We Belong" and "Until It's Time for You to Go."
Thankfully, being an icon doesn't have to mean you're a diva. When Sainte-Marie came to WFUV to talk about her new album, Running for the Drum, she was down-to-earth, flashed her 100-watt smile and laughed easily. She exuded positive energy as she engaged in conversation about the busy life she continues to lead as a musician, artist and educator. All in all, more than 40 years later, Sainte-Marie continues to grow as an artist and inspire as an activist, and it shows here.
