Team Love Records describes Joker's Daughter as "folk pop," but the truth is that the collaboration between vocalist and songwriter Helena Costas and famed producer Danger Mouse is hardly typical of that genre. A full-length debut album, titled The Last Laugh, won't be unveiled until February 2009, but a single, "Worm's Head," has been released as part of a three song EP and offers a glimpse into the eclectic nature of project.
"Worm's Head" is a lush, layered song that begins simply enough, with the strumming of an acoustic guitar. But within seconds, Costas' especially lovely voice joins in along with drums, darkly emotive swells of string orchestration and a few wailing digital effects that all make for an utterly entrancing (albeit too-brief) two minutes. The remaining two tracks on the Worm's Head EP won't be included in the upcoming debut, but they're both fascinatingly odd treats themselves. This is particularly true of "Bouncing Liqourish Bears," which comes off sounding like a creepy circus colliding with a polka band gone electronic, complete with quickly bouncing rhythms and plenty of theatrical presence.
