Jakob Dylan: Newport Folk 2008

Courtesy of the artist

With a small backing band, Jakob Dylan came to Newport with not only songs from his solo debut, Seeing Things, but also music from throughout the Wallflowers catalog. His band included Black Crowes guitarist Audrey Freed, bassist George Reid and Wallflowers drummer Fred Eltringham. At the end of the set, Dylan said he wanted to play "Forever Young," but with good humor said he'd already been upstaged by the Young @ Heart Chorus' set earlier that day.

Dylan has not one but two shadows to cast off now that he's made a solo record: first, his father Bob Dylan, who's certainly no stranger to the Newport Folk Festival; and second, his main band The Wallflowers. In fact, when Dylan played an old Wallflowers favorite, "Three Marlenas," at a recent concert, he joked that the audience was finally figuring out who he was.

On Seeing Things, producer Rick Rubin takes the same approach he did on Johnny Cash's American series by making everything simpler. It's acoustic in nature, yet still filled out with bass, harmonies and keyboards, if ever so subtly.
