Calling her "crucial chronic to the bone," Dr. John summoned Ani DiFranco to the stage to play the title track off his new CD, The City That Care Forgot. It was the highlight of a set of New Orleans-style funk and blues from the Big Easy legend and his band The Lower 911, recorded live in Philadelphia on May 30.
Dr. John's funky takes on jazz standards, his original blues, and his unstoppable stage persona (deer antlers and robes figure prominently) have made him a legend well beyond his hometown. Now in his 60s, the good doctor is still making music and keeping Hurricane Katrina in the public's eye.
Dr. John, Ani DiFranco, The Hold Steady, and Newton Faulkner performed at the NON-COMMvention in Philadelphia. NON-COMM is an annual convention of non-commercial radio programmers and music directors, as well as other music-industry professionals.
