Foo Fighters may be one of today's most popular and radio-friendly rock bands, but it's also one of the most underrated — or at least it was until it received five Grammy nominations Thursday. Since the release of Foo Fighters' self-titled debut in 1995, the group has released some of the best pop and hard-rock music around, with leader Dave Grohl composing infectious tracks that push boundaries, both vocally and musically, and elevate even as they entertain.
The recent Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace finds Grohl and his band exploring new territory, with songs that range from the usual scream-intensive epics to lush, orchestral numbers to tracks that evoke classic rock.
"Statues" perfectly demonstrates the last approach, imbued with a distinct Steely Dan feel. "You and I were two old and tortured souls / repaired by a love of broken things," Grohl sings. "We're just ordinary people, you and me / Time will turn us into statues, eventually." Throughout the song, Grohl's voice conveys timeworn wisdom, of the variety that only 20-plus years in the music business can bring.
