Produced by Thievery Corporation's Eric Hilton, who also released it on his label, Federico Aubele's Panamericana combines South American genres such as tango and bolero with electronic music and hip-hop beats to form smooth, fresh-sounding lounge songs.
Panamericana, named after the Pan-American highway (the network of roads that extends from Alaska to Argentina), features collaborations with artists such as Calexico, Colombian singer Vernie Varela and the Argentinean band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. The disc showcases the diverse musical influences that Aubele, who was born in Argentina but now lives in both Berlin and Barcelona, clearly admires and emulates.
A perfect example of these myriad influences coming together, "Maria Jose" draws on hypnotic horns and soft Caribbean rhythms, serving as a metaphor for an artist who traverses musical genres as easily as he does geographical borders.
