Uncle Earl: Old-Time Strings in Concert

Uncle Earl.
Uncle Earl.

Uncle Earl is an all-star, all-female, old-time string band, with songs ranging from high-energy fiddle tunes and dance numbers to haunting, ancient ballads. Hear Uncle Earl play a concert from WXPN and World Café Live in Philadelphia.

Named in honor of the band members' mutual appreciation for Earl Scruggs and Steve Earle, Uncle Earl formed in 2000. The group quickly gained a strong following and released its debut album, She Went Upstairs, to critical acclaim in 2002.

Uncle Earl's new disc, Waterloo, Tennessee, draws its sounds from the roots of string-band music, incorporating sounds from Scotch-Irish ballads and Celtic fiddle tunes. The disc, produced by Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, is one of the best old-time albums to come out in recent years.
