Best known as the keyboardist for the British Invasion band The Small Faces (later known as The Faces), Ian McLagan has remained active as a session man and a no-nonsense rocker in the nearly three decades since setting out on his own. Hear Mclagan and the Bump Band recorded live in concert from NPR station WXPN and World Cafe Live.
After lending his distinctive keyboard style to the band that made him famous, McLagan launched a solo career. After his first two records (1979's Troublemaker and 1980's Bump in the Night) failed to achieve commercial success, he shifted gears toward session-musician work, playing keyboards for artists like Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen. But he continued to write new material, releasing several albums in the early 2000s with his new supporting players in The Bump Band.
Currently based in Austin, Tex., McLagan and his band maintain a standing Thursday-night gig at a local bar. That's helped cultivate a sense of cohesion that heightens the appeal of their newest album, 2006's Extra Live. Recorded live at NPR station KUT, the session captures the band playing an assortment of gritty originals and covers.
