The Denver-based band DeVotchKa makes music that has been described as indie gypsy-rock. Many listeners know the band from its contributions to the score of Little Miss Sunshine, including the movie's saucy theme, "Enemy Guns."
Now, the four-piece band is delving into Russian chanson music. Russian chanson originated in pre-revolutionary, anti-establishment Russia, and remains an underground music movement today.
DeVotchKa's frontman, Nick Urata, spoke with Alex Cohen about his band's performance of Russian chanson at Los Angeles' Disney Concert Hall.
DeVotchKa's most recent full-length album, How It Ends, was released in 2004.
