California Guitar Trio's members are candid about the kind of music they play, which is evident from the band's name: It's an L.A.-based group of three highly skilled acoustic-guitar players. But its music isn't that simple, as it blends blues, folk, jazz, classical and surf-rock. (It is based in California, after all.) California Guitar Trio is performing from WXPN and The Tin Angel in Philadelphia.
The band's three founding members met when they toured worldwide with Robert Fripp's League of Crafty Guitarists. None are actually from California originally: Hideyo Moriya was born in Tokyo, Bert Lams is from Belgium and Paul Richards hails from Salt Lake City. After the tour with Fripp, they wanted to continue playing music together, so the California Guitar Trio was born. They've since released several albums — the most recent is 2004's Whitewater — and performed with the likes of John Scofield, Tito Puente, Taj Mahal and King Crimson.
