Artie Shaw, an American Original

Artie Shaw.
Artie Shaw.

Clarinetist, composer and bandleader Artie Shaw was a true American original. He was as big as Benny Goodman in his day. But he was a reluctant celebrity, constantly dodging in and out of the spotlight every time he married a beautiful woman -- eight times -- or retired to find some peace and quiet. He gave us classic recordings of "Stardust," "Begin the Beguine" and "These Foolish Things." Here's Shaw's 1940 Concerto for Clarinet, in concert from the Hot Springs Music Festival in Arkansas, with soloist Richard Hawkins and the Festival Orchestra conducted by Richard Rosenberg.
