U.S. Economy Adds 144,000 Jobs in August

Employers add 144,000 new jobs in August, just below what had been predicted by economists but an improvement on lackluster growth in June and July. The monthly unemployment report, released Friday, also showed the unemployment rate dipping to 5.4 percent. NPR's Jack Speer reports.

Senate to Debate Higher Fuel Standards

A new energy bill sets up a Senate debate on a measure to increase fuel economy standards. It would require that cars, trucks and SUVs achieve an average of 35 miles per gallon by 2020. That's 10 miles per gallon over current levels.

Tuesday is the deadline to file federal income tax forms. Of 135 million forms expected this year, at least half will be filed electronically. And 20 percent will come in during this last week.
