Meet The New New South
Monday, August 23 2010
by Frank Stasio and Lindsay Thomas
Is the South as Southern as it used to be? Northern migration and immigration have certainly changed the demographic design of Dixie in the post-segregation era. Gradual transformations to Southern race relations, industry and finance in recent years have also significantly affected the region. In a special joint production with WFAE public radio in Charlotte, host Frank Stasio will look at what defines the American South today with Tom Hanchett, staff historian at the Levine Museum of the New South; David Goldfield, the Robert Lee Bailey professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte; Kerry Haynie, associate professor of political science at Duke University; Justin Catanoso, executive editor of the Triad Business Journal; and Rick Rothacker, a reporter at The Charlotte Observer and the author of “Banktown: The Rise and Struggles of Charlotte’s Big Banks” (John F. Blair/2010). The program is co-hosted by Mike Collins, host of “Charlotte Talks” on WFAE.
