Alex Harris and Bill deBuys were a couple of well-educated, East Coast kids when they found themselves immersed in life in the New Mexico high country in the early 1970s. In their 1990 collaboration, "River of Traps" (Trinity University Press/1990), the photographer and writer told the story of a neighbor named Jacobo, who helped teach them real life lessons in the mountains. The book, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1991, has recently been reprinted. Harris, a professor of public policy and documentary studies at Duke University, and deBuys, a writer and conservationist, join host Frank Stasio to talk about their second education and the work it inspired.
