Rick Dove was a father who simply wanted to take his son fishing. But he became an unlikely environmental activist when he witnessed the damage that waste spills and runoff from industrial hog farms had on his beloved Neuse river. Rick’s journey took him to the Triangle’s university labs and the halls of Raleigh’s Capitol. It included a mysterious microscopic organism, a Pulizter-prize winning newspaper investigation and several lawsuits. And it’s one of three narratives journalist David Kirby includes in his new book, “Animal Factory,” (St. Martin’s Press/ 2010) about the threats posed by industrial meat production. David Kirby joins host Frank Stasio to share Rick’s story and other tales from the factory farm.
