Social Media in the Workplace

Facebook, the behemoth of social media networking sites, claims 400 million active users worldwide. It's hard to know how much Facebook use happens at work, but it's enough to worry employers about the effect on productivity and to worry employees about etiquette and appropriateness. Is social media a waste of worker's time? Can you get fired for what you post on your wall? What about the things that your friends post on your wall? Do you have to accept your boss's friend request? UNC graduate student Fred Stutzman has made a name for himself studying Facebook. He joins guest host Janet Babin, along with UNC-CH law professors Lolly Gasaway and Anne Klinefelter, to discuss the legal, social and professional issues surrounding social media in the workplace. We also check in with former "State of Things" intern Katie Macpherson about using social media to excel at her job. And we hear from Matt Bado, of Booze Allen Hamilton in Northern Virginia, who consults with the military on using social media.
