Child Soldiers
Thursday, September 23 2010
by Alex Granados and Frank Stasio
Stories of children in Africa, Asia and elsewhere being made to murder, clear minefields or participate in acts of violence and mutilation have increased in the last few decades. The International Criminal Court has focused on the issue since its inception and people around the world have struggled to find ways to protect the innocence of children in war-torn countries. Host Frank Stasio will talk about the experience of child soldiers with science fiction writer Mark Van Name, author of the new novel "Children No More" (Baen/2010); Michael Struett, an assistant professor of political science in the School of Public and International Affairs at North Carolina State University; and Stephen Smith, a visiting professor of African studies and cultural anthropology at Duke University.
