Early/Middle Colleges Boost Guilford Graduation Rate

Loretta Rowland-Kitley is the principal of the Early/Middle College at G.T.C.C.

North Carolina had a high school graduation rate that ranked 25th in the nation last year. The state statistics are showing improvement, but still about 27 out of every 100 students do not receive their diploma on time. Of all the large and urban school districts in the state, Guilford County has the best graduation rate. Part of the reason is a growing number of the district's early and middle colleges. Students at those schools are now earning degrees at a near perfect pace. Jeff Tiberii reports as part of our American Graduate series.

Greensboro Students Visiting the White House Garden

A group of students from Greensboro is in Washington D.C. today helping First Lady Michelle Obama plant her White House garden.

Jeff Tiberii: Last year students at Sumner Elementary school students decided to plant their own garden, and sent letters to the First lady seeking advice. Last week the White House called and extended an invitation for five third graders, two teachers and the principal to visit the White House and receive gardening tips first hand. The Men's NCAA basketball Tournament comes to Greensboro this week where North Carolina and Duke hope to survive and advance. The event typically brings tens of thousands of visitors and many millions of dollars to the region. On the floor the expectation is for some of the best basketball the sport has to offer. Guilford County Files Robo-Signing Lawsuit

Guilford County is suing some of the nation’s largest banks over forged mortgage documents.

Jeff Tiberii: Local officials want to put a stop to robo-signing. That’s the practice of third-party employees falsifying financial documents. It has been a national problem in the housing crisis. Register of Deeds Jeff Thigpen found more than 45-hundred mortgages in Guilford County that appear to have been forged.

ACC Women's Tournment Begins Thursday

The ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament tips off tomorrow in Greensboro.

Jeff Tiberii: For the 13th consecutive year the event takes place at the Greensboro Coliseum. This season the conference boasts 3 of the top 10 Women’s teams in the nation: Duke, Miami and Maryland. Meanwhile, UNC-Chapel Hill finished fifth in the A-C-C during the regular season. Head coach Sylvia Hatchell has led her team to eight of the last 10 Tournament Championship games.
