UNC "Y" to House Social Innovation

The historic YMCA building on the Carolina campus will also serve as the home of a new Social Entrepreneurs initiative for students.  The Social Innovation Incubator officially opens in January and will provide space for three teams of students to nurture their projects.  Richard Harrill is the director of the Campus "Y" at UNC.  He says they are currently accepting applications from students who want to be the first residents to work out of the innovation incubator.

UNC Seeks to Improve Physical and Mental Health

Doctors at UNC Chapel Hill want to improve the physical health of patients with severe mental illness. U-N-C's Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health has received a grant from the Duke Endowment to create a "health home" for patients with mental illness. Director John Gilmore says people with serious mental health issues like schizophrenia sometimes have trouble tending to their physical health. Gilmore says psychiatrists treating patients at the center will look out for other problems as well.

UNC Tests Reliability of Human Genome in Diagnoses

Researchers at UNC-Chapel Hill are studying how doctors might use human genome sequencing in their private practices. The university is one of five institutions to receive a $6.4 million grant for the project. Scientists have spent the last two decades identifying and mapping each of the three billion groups of molecules that make up human DNA. UNC School of Medicine doctor Jim Evans says the next step is developing genomes as a reliable way to identify genetic diseases.

Researchers to Design a Future Internet

Researchers from NC State and UNC Chapel Hill are working on an improved blueprint for the Internet. The project is part of the National Science Foundation’s effort on “Future Internet Architecture.”  The team in North Carolina is focused on making more choices available to end-users. Ilia Baldine is a senior researcher at UNC.

UNC Stumbles on Buried 19th Century Building

Crews uncover the buried structure

Archaeologists at UNC-Chapel Hill say they've uncovered a structure on campus that is an underground cellar from the early 1800s. Construction crews ran into the buried structure last month while building a new drainage pipe underneath McCorkle Place.

UNC-CH Tuition Hike Clears First Hurdle

A task force at UNC-Chapel Hill has approved sizable tuition hikes.

The Tuition and Fee Advisory Task Force voted to raise in-state tuition 16-and-a-half percent and out-of-state tuition 6-and-a-half percent.

Student leaders offered proposals for much smaller increases. UNC-Chapel Hill officials say state budget cuts necessitate large tuition increases to maintain quality.

It's the first step in a months-long process toward possibly increasing tuition at UNC-Chapel Hill.

UNC System Turns 40

Only five people have ever been the president of the 16-campus UNC system. Tom Ross, Erskine Bowles, Molly Broad, C-D Spangler, and Bill Friday got together last night to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the creation of the UNC system. It was a night of shared experiences and behind-the-scenes stories. But, the best story of all may be how the system was created in the early 1970s.
