Synthetic Ice Rink Offers Warm-Weather Skating

Recent warm weather has not stopped ice skaters from hitting a rink in Graham. The synthetic surface at the Children's Museum of Alamance County does not rely on cold weather or freezing water. Carlyn Sautter works for Graham Parks and Recreation.

Carlyn Sautter: "It is not ice, its actually a very dense polymer. But it skates like ice, it actually looks like ice, so you kind of feel like you're on ice when you're out there. You do use real ice skates so it gives it that added effect as well."

'Canes Hire New Coach

Eric Hodge: The Carolina Hurricanes have a new coach. Kyle Muller has been chosen to lead the Triangle’s only major sports franchise. Dave DeWitt reports.

The Canes entered the season hoping to battle for the southeast division title in the NHL – or, at least, make the playoffs. But after winning just 8 of their first 25 games, the Hurricanes have the second-worst record in the division. That led team management to fire head coach Paul Maurice.

General Manager Jim Rutherford says it’s time to make a change.

Greensboro Aquatic Center Drawing Big Events

This weekend the Greensboro Aquatic Center hosts the first prominent event in its brief history. The facility is serving hundreds of local people each day while trying to also gain attention on the national swimming stage.

UNC Faces The NCAA

UNC-Chapel Hill officials are in Indianapolis this morning. They are there to face the NC-double-A infractions committee over improper activities in the football program.

Chancellor Holden Thorp and outgoing athletic director Dick Baddour hope to convince the committee to accept the punishment the University has already given itself. Those penalties include vacating all wins in the 2008 and 2009 season, losing nine football scholarships and a 50-thousand dollar fine.
