Governor Pat McCrory's office says it no longer has a staff member devoted to Hispanic affairs.  The governor's staff says the duties of the state's Latino office will go to another office that handles all contact with state residents.

Educators don’t often get a chance to celebrate publicly, so it was understandable when State Superintendent June Atkinson stood up at a news conference last fall and bragged a little about North Carolina’s 80 percent high school graduation rate.

“This is excellent news for our state and one more step toward ensuring that all of our students graduate from high school career, college, and citizenship ready,” said Atkinson.

Today, Pope Francis officially became the 266th Pope for the Catholic Church, and the first representative of the New World. The 265 men who served before him were all European, but Pope Francis was born in Argentina, where he continued to serve until the church tapped him for the top job in Rome.

The Latino immigrant population faces a host of unique problems when it comes to mental health treatment. Migration trauma and separation issues are just a few of their struggles. The population in North Carolina is underserved, which is why a group of mental health professionals formed the group El Futuro. The group serves the mental health needs of the state’s Latino population, and it is hosting a conference this Friday on the topic. A two-year Department of Justice investigation has concluded that the Alamance County Sheriff, Terry Johnson, and his department have been carrying on a routine of discrimination against Latinos. Johnson denies the allegations, and the Alamance County Board of Commissioners is asking the DOJ to present its evidence. Alamance County is expected to respond to the US Department of justice today, following the findings of an investigation and alleged racial profiling by the Sheriff's Department.
