Senator Kay Hagan toured UNC Children's Hospital yesterday as part of a push for her bill that would streamline approval of treatments for serious and rare diseases.

Hagan says the Food and Drug Administration needs to find faster ways to get treatments to patients suffering from rare diseases.

Some minority owners of small businesses met with U.S. Senator Kay Hagan to chat about challenges they face and opportunities available to help them prosper. The North Carolina Democrat brought a member of the Small Business Administration to hear how owners are falling short in the marketplace. Leah Brown is president of medical research firm A10 Solutions in Cary. She says they try to compete for big-money contracts, but it is a challenge to find qualified workers

Hagan Expects Defense Spending to Increase in NC

U.S. Senator Kay Hagan says she'll fight to protect North Carolina's military institutions from recently-announced defense cuts. But Hagan told WUNC the Pentagon's plans include certain funding increases as well.

Kay Hagan: The increase will be in areas of cyber-security, special operations forces, and areas like that. And that's gonna be where the increases in the budget are actually going. And in North Carolina, in Fayetteville at Fort Bragg, USASOC is headquartered there, and that's where all our special operations forces are administered from.
