Media, UNC-CH Argue Over Cell Phone Records

Lawyers representing several media outlets and UNC-Chapel Hill argued today over what constitutes a public document. At the center of the case are the personal cell phone records of former football coach Butch Davis. Dave DeWitt reports.

Dave DeWitt: The media outlets contend that Davis was acting as a public official when he conducted the business of managing the UNC-Chapel Hill football program over his personal cell phone. Their attorneys argued today that that means those records should be public.

NCAA Penalizes UNC Football Program

The UNC Football team has been banned from participating in the post-season this fall.

Jeff Tiberii: North Carolina’s football team will also lose five scholarships in each of the next three seasons, and be on probation until 2015. The NCAA announced the punishments Monday following a report by the Division 1 Committee on Infractions. Violations took between 2008 and 2010 and include academic fraud, payments to players. Britton Banowsky is chair of the Committee on Infractions.

Wolfpack In Charlotte For Bowl

NC State football fans are making their way to Charlotte today. The Wolfpack is playing Louisville in the Belk Bowl.

This has been a challenging and triumphant year to be an NC State football fan. Coach Tom O’Brien says that especially early in the season, things didn’t look good.

Tom O'Brien: "Certainly we’re excited about the opportunity to continue our season. At a point 7 games ago we didn’t look like we’d be on anyone’s radar."

UNC Goes Bowling Today

North Carolina will play in its 4th consecutive bowl game later today. The Tar Heels take on Missouri in the Independence Bowl.

The last 18 months have seen major changes to North Carolina’s football program. And the state of transition will last one more game, as interim coach Everett Withers coaches the team despite the hiring of a new head coach.

Larry Fedora was chosen to lead the program, but Withers will coach the team at the Independence Bowl. Withers was a candidate for the permanent job, but didn’t get it.

UNC Faces The NCAA

UNC-Chapel Hill officials are in Indianapolis this morning. They are there to face the NC-double-A infractions committee over improper activities in the football program.

Chancellor Holden Thorp and outgoing athletic director Dick Baddour hope to convince the committee to accept the punishment the University has already given itself. Those penalties include vacating all wins in the 2008 and 2009 season, losing nine football scholarships and a 50-thousand dollar fine.
