Greensboro Looks For A Million Dollar Idea

  • Greensboro is seeking applications for a $1 million federal grant, designed to grow the local economy.

Leaders in Greensboro are accepting submissions for a federal grant that will award one million dollars for an innovative plan.  The winning idea is supposed to help the city’s economy by designing a way to improve long-term job prospects.  Organizers admit they’re being purposely vague to see what kind of submissions they get to develop the city.  A panel of about 20 people that will ultimately chose the winning entry, met for the first time on Wednesday.

Sutton’s Drug Store Celebrates 90 Years In Business

Ask any long-time Chapel Hill resident to name a few of the town’s business icons, and Sutton’s Drug Store is likely to come up. Founded in 1923, the old fashioned pharmacy has been open for 90 years and celebrates that fact today with a special deal for its customers: from 11:00 to 4:30, hot dogs, Cokes and French fries will be only a nickel, reflecting the store’s 1923 prices. They’re expecting several hundreds of customers.

Twice a year, in April and October, High Point becomes the center of the furniture and home furnishings world.   This week, Stanley Furniture is getting a lot of attention, showing off its new space.  Stanley recently moved to High Point from Virginia.  It’s just one sign of  growth in the furniture industry in North Carolina after years of decline.

Duke Study: Minorities Dig Deeper In Their Pockets To Buy Homes

Blacks and Hispanics are paying significantly more in home prices than whites. That's according to new research out of Duke University that tracked more than two million home sales in Chicago, San Francisco, Washington D.C. and L.A.

American Tobacco Trail's I-40 Pedestrian Bridge Goes Up This Weekend

Structural engineers will put a pedestrian bridge over I-40 this weekend.  Work crews will stay busy overnight Sunday to install the addition to the historic American Tobacco Trial.  The bridge is a major step in adding four miles to the American Tobacco Trail that connects the existing portion to a stretch that ends at the Chatham County line.

Ed Venable, an engineer on the bridge placement project,  says I-40 will have to be shut down to put this bridge --  now in four sections -- in place.
