NC Congressional Candidates Speak At RNC

Republican candidates for three contested congressional seats in North Carolina addressed the Republican convention in Tampa earlier today. David Rouzer, who's challenging Democratic Representative Mike McIntyre of the 7th district, spoke, as did Mark Meadows, who's running against Hayden Rogers in Western North Carolina. Richard Hudson is challenging Democratic Congressman Larry Kissell of the 8th District.

Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton is running for Governor. Here he answers a transportation question at a town hall meeting in Winston-Salem.

Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Walter Dalton held a Town Hall meeting this morning in Winston-Salem.

Jeff Tiberii: The current Lieutenant Governor answered questions from a group of about 30 people at a local community college. Dalton responded to audience members on issues of transportation, education and was repeatedly asked about taxes and if he would extend a sales tax increase, should he be elected to office; a position he has not taken a definitive stance on.

Forest Wins Nomination for Lieutenant Governor

In the Republican run-off election for Lieutenant Governor on Tuesday Dan Forest beat Tony Gurley.

Jeff Tiberii: Forest received nearly 68-percent of the vote in a second primary that had low turnout at the polls. Forest is the son of Sue Myrick, the retiring 9-term Congresswoman and former mayor of Charlotte. He has never held political office but easily beat Tony Gurley who has 10 years experience on the Wake County board of Commissioners. Forest says his attention now shifts toward his November opponent, Democrat Linda Coleman.

Work begins today on converting Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte into a suitable site for the Democratic National Convention. We hear all the time that North Carolina is one of the most anti-union states in the country and it's true there are few labor unions here. But some of the ones that are here will be out in force over the coming months preparing Charlotte for the DNC. WFAE's Julie Rose reports on one local union that plays a significant role in Charlotte year-round.
