Wind Turbine Project Cancelled in Pamlico Sound

Bookmark and Share

Duke Energy will no longer help finance a plan to put three wind turbines in Pamlico Sound. The proposed project was a joint venture between Duke Energy and UNC-Chapel Hill. It was widely seen as the first step toward establishing off-shore wind farms in North Carolina. But the company decided to halt the project after researchers realized putting up just one turbine would cost 88 million dollars. Jason Walls is a spokesman for Duke Energy.

Jason Walls: One of the things that we've learned is that the economies of scale really help determine the economic viability of moving forward with these projects. So what our next step is to work with the University of North Carolina to continue some of the scientific research that is already underway.

The company has promised to fund a UNC study that will look at wind energy in the Atlantic. Senate President Marc Basnight was a supporter of the Pamlico Sound project, but he approves the decision not to go forward. He says Duke Energy and UNC should pursue projects that are economically feasible.
