Public Hearing Set for Chatham Courthouse

Bookmark and Share

Officials in Chatham County will hold a public hearing later this month on the rebuilding of the county courthouse. A task force has presented recommendations for how to use the rebuilt courthouse. Debra Henzey with the Chatham County Manager's Office says the 21-member task force gathered public input before finalizing its report.

Debra Henzey:  The vast majority of the task force members want to keep a courthouse function on the 2nd floor, for history purposes as well as it just appears that in the future that will be a need down the road.

The report says the new courthouse should have updated sound, lighting, and technology- and should be easily accessible to disabled visitors. Henzey says the commissioners will move quickly because construction of the new courthouse needs to be completed by early 2013 for insurance reasons. A fire damaged the 1881 courthouse earlier this year. The public hearing will be Monday September 20th.
