House Speaker Joe Hackney is expecting the Governor to call a special session at 7:30pm.
Confused yet?
- The session that opened at 2pm today is a veto session. The only action lawmakers can take in a veto session is a vote on the veto itself (and adjourning, of course).
- The concurrent special session would allow legislators to take up a compromise incentives measure.
Meantime, the veto session is on hold till 9:00 pm.
Sen. Majority Leader Tony Rand said late this afternoon that the Senate has NOT agreed to the compromise being worked out between the House and Governor.
But here's a possible scenario: the House approves the compromise deal tonight anyway, but takes no action on the veto.
If they do, the whole thing becomes the Senate's problem. Even if Senators refuse to accept the House compromise, they still can't touch the veto if the House never sends it to them. And that would leave Rand and Goodyear with a choice between the House deal or no deal at all.
So go get the popcorn, and stay tuned.
