Former top lobbyist Don Beason was found guilty today of one count of simple assault. But Wake County District Judge Joy Hamilton found him not guilty of assault by pointing a gun, which could've been a bit more serious.
Featured at today's bench trial was another witness who said Beason gestured at him with a gun, too, in an earlier incident. A police officer also testified that Beason's gun was loaded when he was arrested this summer. But Beason's attorney Bob Hensley argued that Beason didn't point the gun at anyone in either incident. WRAL has the details and backstory here.
Meantime, Dome is the lone outlet currently reporting Beason's sentence - unsupervised probation and 100 hours community service. Beason also had to turn over his .357. As one of his fellow downtown motorists, I'd say that sounds like a pretty good idea...
