Thursday: Catching Up

I’ve been away from Jones St. this week, filling in for host Frank Stasio on The State of Things. (If you missed it, Tuesday’s show is online here, and Wednesday’s is here.) In the meantime, my press corps colleagues have been busy. Some highlights:
- State Sen. David Weinstein (D-Robeson) is leaving his seat to become director of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program. The AP’s Gary Robertson reports Weinstein had hinted he wouldn’t run again and hoped to chair the state ABC commission, but that post went to someone else last week.
- At Dome, Char-O's Mark Johnson reports Wake Dems are already lining up to take over former Rep Ty Harrell’s seat.
- Sen. Andrew Brock (R-Davie) is one of the leaders of a new conservative group, Wake Up America, that’s hoping to go nationwide. The AP’s Gary Robertson has the details.
- Microsoft billionaires Bill and Melinda Gates are in North Carolina this week. The AP reports the couple talked to high school and community college students in Charlotte yesterday, and they’re scheduled to meet with former Gov. Jim Hunt in Raleigh today.
- Greensboro’s Mark Binker has video of Senator Kay Hagan’s floor speech on health care reform, plus a rundown of her later remarks to NC reporters.
- At the N&O, Barb Barrett says ACORN’s North Carolina operation is struggling in the wake of the group's national scandal.
I’m headed up to DC today for a budget reporting conference, and then out for a week of sorely-needed vacation. I’ll see you back here October 5th.
Comments? Drop me a line.
