Sorry, that's classified

The Virginian-Pilot’s Catherine Kozak says no one's saying much about the cause of the fire that destroyed Senate pro tem Marc Basnight’s Nags Head Lone Cedar Cafe earlier this year.

Kozak's story sounds a lot like an "Abbott and Costello" routine - the locals say it's the state's job to answer questions, but the state says it's the locals' job.  Apparently, no one actually knows whose job is whose, but no one wants to hand over information to the press - even though the NC Press Association says it's subject to open records law. The article's here.

"It's going to be a hell of a Christmas."

Gov. Mike Easley might be bringing in some extra hot cocoa for all the protestors he's expecting. A day after NC's five top gubernatorial candidates agreed illegal immigrants shouldn't be admitted to community colleges, Easley told the Char-O's Jack Betts why he doesn't agree - and why he thinks whoever wins might reconsider, too.

What's the bag limit?

Char-O's Jim Morrill says state Treasurer Richard Moore's been poaching high-dollar gubernatorial donors in the Queen City. If Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory (R) really wants to run, looks like he 'd better hurry up and say so before the local "business-friendly" money finds its way to other candidates.

Other good stuff:

  • Greensboro's Mark Binker has Part 2 of his recent report on problems in the mental health system. It’s pretty disturbing stuff.

  • Winston-Salem's James Romoser has a rundown of the new state laws that took effect Saturday 12/1.

  • The N&O's Rob Christensen says a new survey shows kids these days don't know much about US history.   Rob says he got an 88. I came in just under, at 85.  Darn that "just-war" doctrine!  Take the quiz yourself here.

Meanwhile, in Iowa...

BFFs?

Dem rivals Barack Obama and John Edwards were unusually nice to each other Saturday night at the Brown and Black debate in Iowa.  So - who's hoping who will be VP material two months from now?  The synopsis is here.

Meantime, Edwards released a plan today to help lower- and middle-class families get out of debt.  It's pretty progressive stuff  - too progressive for many, probably, but still interesting.

Just because it's good:

Former WA state governor Booth Gardner plays a central role in one of the best articles I've ever read on assisted suicide.   Whatever side you're on, read it - it's worth it.

And...more trouble for Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) - and this goes WAY beyond foot-tapping. The Statesman has audio of interviews with four men willing to go on record to refute Craig's claims that he's not gay.  Warning: Neither the article nor the audio is suitable for the under-18 crowd - it's definitely R-rated stuff.  Wonder what this will do to Craig's long-deferred resignation plans?
