The N&O's Matt Ehlers has a nice remembrance of State Senator Vernon Malone, who passed away at his home Saturday at the age of 77.
(Update: The Senator's viewing will be Wednesday, April 22 from 9 to 4 at Lea Funeral Home in Raleigh. Wednesday evening from 6-8, the Malone family will receive visitors at Martin Street Baptist Church, where the funeral will be held Thursday at noon.)
Greensboro’s Mark Binker wins the Metaphor Of The Day award for describing the local quest for recovery dollars as a “strange Easter Egg hunt …in which nobody knows all the rules or exactly what the eggs look like.” Related: Rocky Mount city leaders are expecting about $2M, according to John Henderson at the RM Telegram.
Charlotte’s Kirsten Valle reports fraudulent jobless claims are on the rise in NC.
The N&O's Rob Christensen offers some historical context for the money fight between the state’s public schools and its universities.
Also at the N&O, Andy Curliss says federal investigators are looking into two areas with connections to former governor Mike Easley – his car “lease” arrangement with Hendricks and Bleeker, and his land purchase at Cannonsgate. The Carolina Journal’s been arguing for years that the governor got a sweetheart deal. No word yet on whether the Feds agree.
Char-O’s Jack Betts weighs in on last week's Chapel Hill shoutdown of anti-illegal-immigration activist Tom Tancredo.
Hot tickets
A few (but by no means all) of the bills you’re likely to be reading about this week:
- Tuesday at 11am, House Education hears H593, a proposal to allow local school boards to opt out of 2004 legislation prohibiting non-year-round schools from starting their year before August 25th.
- Also on Tuesday morning, House J1 takes up H442, which would allow parents to rule out school spankings for their children.
- Tuesday afternoon, House State Government debates H708, allowing involuntary furloughs of state workers.
- And Wednesday at 11am, Senate Health Care takes up H2, Holliman’s watered-down smoking ban.
