Bev-apalooza
The N&O’s Rob Christensen had a frontpage profile piece today, calling Gov. Perdue “sure-footed, centrist, with almost a Schwarzenegger-style self-confidence.” Wow. (Having covered Schwarzenegger in my CA days, I can vouch that's saying something.)
The AP’s Gary Robertson looked at reactions to Perdue’s first 60 days in office. The reviews so far are good, but that could change once she rolls out her budget cuts.
Related: Gov Perdue spoke out against economic pessimism at Friday’s NCEDA conference in Pinehurst, in a speech that may offer a preview of her State of the State address tomorrow night. The SoPines Pilot’s John Kranhert has the details.
By the way, you can catch the SOS address live tomorrow night at 7pm on WUNC.
In non-Bev news
- Fay-O’s Paul Woolverton talked to State Sen Larry Shaw about his new national position as chairman of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
- At the N&O, Martha Quillan reports on the brightest spot in the state’s economy: the expansion underway at Fort Bragg.
- Wilmington’s Chris Mazzolini looks into concerns that the new Titan Cement plant in Castle Hayne will worsen mercury pollution at the coast.
- NC companies are lining up to fight for stimulus money for “smart grid” development. The AP has the story.
- And the Citizen-Times runs down the list of Shuler’s earmarks for western NC.
In case you missed it...
NC Schools Superintendent June Atkinson issued a strongly worded reaction late Thursday to the appointment of Bill Harrison as state school system CEO. Fayetteville’s Paul Woolverton has a nice wrap-up.
UNC’s Leroy Towns wonders if Jon Stewart’s gonzo takedown of CNBC this week is “the new journalism.”
CNN came to Clemmons, NC, to report on how the economy is affecting access to health care.
And just for fun: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson went cabaret last night on SNL, right before making Rahm Emanuel's dreams come true as "TheRock Obama." It's the best stuff SNL's done since the election. If you missed it, check 'em out.
