In what could hardly have been a surprise to anyone, Barack Obama, who’s been staying in Asheville, took a break from his debate prep to drop in on the Dems’ annual Vance-Aycock Dinner. The AP’s Mike Baker has the details.
Gov. Easley followed up with a little stand-up, according to Char-O's Jim Morrill (HT: Dome).
Also from Morrill, some Dems are concerned about the gov’s race, where Bev Perdue’s now polling several points behind Republican challenger Pat McCrory.
The N&O’s Rob Christensen compares the “curses” confronting both McCrory and Perdue.
Downticket
Charlotte's Ames Alexander and David Ingram look for links between fine reductions and campaign contributions to Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry.
More Council counsel:
- Greensboro’s Mark Binker checks out the AG race.
- The N&O’s Lynn Bonner writes up the race for Ag Commish.
- And the N&O’s Ben Niolet checked in on the Auditor’s contest Friday.
Other crises of note
The N&O's Michael Biesecker digs up a great big pile of fresh dirt on Cherry Hospital – abuse of funds, extravagant travel expenditures, grants from drug companies, and a big staff retreat at the beach even as federal regulators were threatening to yank the hospital’s accreditation.
Cherry's director says he took his work along to the event at the SunSpree resort.
Asked if he should have canceled the event, St. Clair bristled.
"I work my [butt] off for Cherry Hospital and so do a lot of the department heads," St. Clair said. "We've got a lot of hard-working folks down there and I do resent the fact that a lot of people might get the impression I'm down there playing, having a good time."
Can’t imagine why anyone would. Nice piece.
Whacking Wachovia
The AP is reporting this morning that a NY judge has temporarily blocked the Wells-Fargo/Wachovia deal at the behest of spurned suitor Citigroup.
W-SJ’s Richard Craver has a nice story on the impact of Wachovia’s meltdown on loyal NC investors.
Charlotte’s Jack Betts looks back at the history of Wachovia and wonders what’s next.
Cue the stopwatch
The Fay-O’s Henry Cuningham says an ex-Army major will tell 60 Minutes tonight that US Special Forces were undermined by US superiors in a 2001 attempt to kill Osama bin Laden.
Just because...
Best read of the day: “Politics at the Five-and Dime” by WaPo’s Anne Hull, who takes the art of the voter profile to new heights. (It would have made a brilliant radio story. Dang.)
OMG: Best. Dog. Owner. EVER.
Right place, right time: A MS riverboat captain saves the day in the OBX.
Clip 'n save: Political pumpkin carving 101.
