Story problem?

Guilford Dem Alma Adams tells Greensboro’s Mark Binker the Legislative Black Caucus is still working through its books.  Earlier this year, there were rumors the LBC Scholarship fund might be missing as much as $200K.  At that point, Adams called for an audit, though she told me that was just standard procedure during a change in Caucus leadership.  But there’s no way to tell if that is or isn't the case, because the fund is a private nonprofit, so its books are not public record.

Since then, it’s come out that the scholarship fund gave out money to family members of five legislators who’ve overseen the fund in recent years.  And despite intensified scrutiny of legislative ethics overall, House Speaker Joe Hackney and others have been uncharacteristically reluctant to call on the LBC to open the fund’s books.

Adams told Binker the group should be ready to discuss its audit next month. In the meantime, she says the process has been “positive.” Binker has more here.

Roller Kos-ter

Over at Dome, Ryan Teague Beckwith reports the NCGOP is calling on Dems to repudiate uber-blogger Kos.

In a press release, the state party calls liberal blogger Markos Moulitsas Zúniga the 'founder of an extremist website' known for his 'angry, incendiary comments' and 'hate-filled rants."'

As you'd imagine, after seven years of listening to clear-eyed, rational conservative commentary from the likes of Bill O'Reilly and Ann Coulter, the Dems had an absolute field day with this one. State Dem spokesperson Kerra Bolton sure did.  So did the bloggers over at Kos and Blue NC, where Anglico called NCGOP chair Linda Daves a “godsend in black pumps.”  (And no, that’s not a compliment.)

June’s got company

NCAE chief Eddie Davis announced today he’s officially entering the primary race against incumbent Dem state schools chief June Atkinson.  You’re not shocked, are you?

You KNOW it's campaign season…

...when you’ve got John Edwards, WaPo’s “The Fix” blogger Chris Cillizza, former Dukes of Hazard star Cooter, MySpace, MTV, and bluegrass all involved in one event.  So hip, it’s enough to give this cultural studies geek head spins...or make a cynic wonder what's up with Cillizza's page hits.  Here’s the release.

S.T.A.M.P.  -  “Stop The Acronym Madness, Please!”

State officials today announced a groundbreaking partnership in medical research between Dole Chairman and Kannapolis funder David Murdock and Duke, along with UNC and the NC Community College System.

That’s wonderful news, don’t get me wrong…but the new project’s title has to be the frontrunner for the state's most tortured acronym ever. From today’s Capstrat press release:

"Duke University scientists will lead the Measurement to Understand Reclassification of Disease Cabarrus/Kannapolis (M.U.R.D.O.C.K.) Study. Researchers from the sixteen-campus University of North Carolina system will also play important roles."

For cryin’ out loud, people, what'd the English language ever do to you? Just call it the Murdock Center and say thank you. Sheesh.

Comments? Drop me a line.
