Meade’s Chair
During the Q&A following Thursday's
veto annoucement, Easley told an interesting story about the chair I
always sit in at these shindigs.
First, a little background.
The Governor usually holds press conferences in his office in the Old
Capitol. It’s a picturesque and historic setting, but not the most
convenient venue for a lot of folks toting a lot of lights, cameras, and other equipment.
Within a few
feet of the audio box is a small, fairly rickety wooden chair holding a
throw and a pillow. It’s out of the camera line, and right next to a
desk – perfect if you’re trying to monitor a recorder while taking
notes in your notebook.
Anyway, when Easley called on me
Thursday, he stopped to ask if I knew the story of the chair – “Meade’s
Chair,” as he calls it. It came from the courthouse where he started
as a prosecutor, and its usual occupant was a character who's stayed
with Easley to this day.
I can’t tell the tale any better or more
concisely than he does. So listen for yourself.
