Friday: A nice guy story

On CBS News tonight, I saw a segment on a “Good Samaritan” on San Diego's highways. It inspired me to share my own story from this week.
I was on my way to the gubernatorial debate at WRAL Tues. night when my tire went flat on I-40. It was the same tire that had gone flat two weeks ago. I’d had it fixed, but…well…
Anyway, I pulled off and headed for the closest gas station, where I discovered how bad the damage was. Dressed up for work, in the rain, I’d resigned myself to changing the tire and was hauling my pathetic little jack out of the trunk when, suddenly, a young guy runs up. He couldn’t have been more than 21 – skinny, probably a student, filling up his car on the way to his job at Marco’s Pizza. He was carrying a much better jack and tools, too.
In the pouring rain, on his way to work, he changed my tire. Just because.
What a world away from the first time that tire went flat, at the Obama event two weeks prior, where I worked for 25 minutes in the dark to change the tire as one cop after another drove by, looked on with interest, and kept going.
With this guy's help, I made it to the debate on time Tuesday, and the tire’s now replaced, so hopefully there won’t be a three-peat performance. But in case you’re wondering why NC has a reputation as a state full of nice people...well, there you go.
And if you’re inclined, try Marco’s Pizza sometime. They hire good people.
