July 30, a lion gave birth to four cubs at The North Carolina Zoo. It's the first birth since October 2006. The four cubs are not on exhibit now, but the zoo has made a behind-the-scenes video of them available. They are with mother Mekita:
The cubs will be at the zoo for the next year. Keepers say that in the wild, male cubs leave the pride they are born into. So the cubs will eventually go to a new home. (Their gender is currently unknown.)
On World Lion Day, Saturday, August 9, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the North Carolina Zoo's lion exhibit, zoo staff will feature lions. There will be games and crafts for kids. Zoo keepers will be on hand to talk about the zoo's newborn cubs.
