Underclassmen are swarming the Triangle this week, and the flurry of moving boxes has already begun at some universities.
UNC Chapel Hill says nearly 4,000 of today's incoming freshmen were selected from a record number of 31,331 applicants.
Aside from the obvious enrollment data, UNC Chapel Hill keeps track of the most popular first names of the incoming class: 45 guys are named John, and 56 gals answer to Emily.
There's also a Purple Heart recipient in the class. Army Staff Sergeant Carlos Cordero was honored for wounds he received while serving in Afghanistan.
Duke University will welcome 1,700 freshmen to campus tomorrow. Duke's Dean of Admissions, Christof Guttentag won't spill any trivia until Wednesday's convocation.
But Duke spokesman Geoffrey Mock says LAST year's freshman class included Rachel Nedrow. She's America's fastest female cup stacker. This is also the first year Duke's freshman class is 50 percent white, 50 percent students of color.
N.C. State University began freshmen move in last week, but it expects more than 4,400 freshmen by the time classes begin Wednesday. The freshmen class has a weighted high school grade point average of 4.41. Forty-nine students had perfect scores on the math portion of the SAT.
